Fillings are materials that help restore teeth damaged by cavities back to their normal shapes and functions by occupying spaces in cavities and obstructing bacteria and other inflammatory substances from entering the restored teeth. Treating tooth decay prevents the cavities from getting larger, which can cause different complications, such as tooth abscess, and tooth loss. Below are common types of filling:

1. Amalgam fillings - Silver and mercury-containing metal mixtures, these fillings are strong and last for a minimum of 10 years. They are suitable for filling back portions of teeth because their colors don't match teeth colors.

2. Ceramic fillings - Made from porcelain, ceramic fillings are tooth-colored and look natural.

3. Glass Ionomer - Composed of fluoroaminosilicate (a glass component), these filings are suitable for deeper cavities and are also used for baby teeth.

4. Composite fillings - Suitable for visible parts of teeth, these fillings have natural teeth color and are stronger than amalgam fillings.
